New Scholarships for 2015

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District Foundation is pleased to announce that due to tremendous support from two families, new scholarship opportunities will be available to 2015 Vinton-Shellsburg graduates.

The first set of scholarships are from the endowment fund set up by the donation from the estate of Marjorie McDowell. A total of $14,000 will be awarded in scholarships in 2015 to V-S graduates in honor of Marjorie Schloeman McDowell. The recipients must be continuing their education at an accredited four year college or university. Criteria for selection will include accomplishments, a sincere desire to further their education, good citizenship and need for the scholarship, with need for funding being the predominant factor. Minimum size of scholarship will be $1,000.

The second set of scholarships are from the Louise Gilchrist Charitable Trust. A total of $5,000 (minimum size of scholarship will be $1,000) will be awarded in honor of Louise Gilchrist. The recipients can be continuing their education at any two- or four-year school in the field of their choice. Criteria will include accomplishments, goals and plans for the future including need for scholarship, and good citizenship.

Applications will be available on-line starting February 22, 2016. All local scholarship applications will be due or post marked by April 1 for students to be eligible to be considered. Scholarships

Elmo and Mary Zada Baxter Memorial
Two one-year scholarships will be awarded with a preference toward one female and one male. The applicants must be in good standing and in the top 30% of their graduating class. The recipients must have been admitted to an Iowa College or University. Essay required.

Howard and Imogene Matters
Awarded to a V-S HS graduate who is planning a career in a science-related field of study. Applicants must have successfully completed three units (6 credits) of high school science while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better in high school science classes. Applicants must be able to document acceptance into a post-secondary educational institution. Essay required.

Ben and Nina Smith Memorial
Open to all applicants pursing a post-secondary education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Russell T and Naomi V. Cottrell Memorial
Available to any graduating senior pursuing a post-secondary education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Esther Williams Memorial
Open to all applicants pursing a post-secondary education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Gerald and Beatrice Irwin Memorial
Awarded to a graduating senior who resides within a 10-mile radius of City Hall in Garrison, Iowa. The recipient shall have been accepted and enrolled in any program of post high school education. Essay required. Letters of recommendation required.

Louise Gilchrist Charitable Trust
A total of $5,000 will be awarded in honor of Louise Gilchrist. The recipients can be continuing their education at any two- or four-year school in the field of their choice. Criteria will include accomplishments, goals and plans for the future including need for scholarship, and good citizenship. The minimum size of each scholarship will be $1,000.

Applying for Scholarships

The VSCSD Foundation currently administers 14 endowed scholarships to the benefit of Vinton-Shellsburg High School graduates. Applications for these scholarships can be found online between February 22 and April 1, 2016.
All scholarship applications will be due or post marked by April 1 for students to be eligible to be considered.  No applications will be accepted prior to February 22 or after April 1st.

Establishing a Scholarship

An endowed scholarship can be established with an initial contribution of $7,500. This investment will support an  annual scholarship. The scholarships can be established in your name, the name of your family or an organization, or to memorialize another individual. You may also set criteria for applicants and even be involved in the selection of recipients. For more information on establishing a scholarship, please contact the Foundation office.
